Values

At Beach Plum we believe…

That a sense of fun and playfulness should be part of every space, and every project

In being clear about your beliefs and point of view in design–it’s not necessary to please everyone with the art on the walls, books on the shelves, or the paint color you’ve chosen–as long as it makes you smile and feel at home

That JOY can be integrated into our lives and our environments in simple and inexpensive ways

In radically inclusive and welcoming design–where visitors can see themselves and feel a sense of belonging

That building and designing in a climate-forward way is both a necessity and a responsibility

“When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment, not the flower.”

-Alexander Den Heijer

Ways we demonstrate our values in our work

  • Beach Plum builds for the future, and starting in 2021, we pledged to build only fossil fuel free homes. We use all electric systems and appliances, energy efficient lighting, salvaged and repurposed materials, avoid single use plastics, and stock eco-friendly laundry, dishwashing and personal care amenities. We pay close attention to new technology, materials and research to inform this work. Builders for Climate Action is one resource for learning more.

  • Beach Plum intentionally and thoughtfully stocks a wide variety of books throughout our spaces. We pair classics with new favorites, books with diverse points of view and characters from all backgrounds and ethnicities. You’ll find vintage Babar books alongside Last Stop on Market Street, titles that spark conversation and new ways of thinking, like Caste and Braiding Sweetgrass, and fun reads like our current favorite Romantic Comedy. Books in our properties aren’t there to just look pretty on a shelf, they are there to be discovered and savored.

  • Beach Plum regularly offers our properties for free to nonprofits (particularly those with a focus on racial justice and LGBTQIA rights) for retreats, and to artists/social workers/teachers who don’t make enough money in our society to afford the vacations that they are so deserving of.  Contact us to learn more about these opportunities.

“Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.”
